About the Research

Understanding Arts Service Organizations in a Changing Arts Ecosystem aims to understand the role, impact, and ongoing evolution of arts service organizations in the United States today. It is a multi-phase, multi-year research process focused on the ways in which arts service manifests within the framework of art as "industry," and more specifically within the nonprofit industrial complex.

The first phase of this research project took place from May 1, 2023–October 18, 2024 and was led by cultural strategist Alejandra Duque Cifuentes of ADC Consulting, in collaboration with senior research and planning consultant Carrie Blake, additional members of the ADC Consulting team, and a Cohort of 14 arts workers and advocates with expertise leading, working within, and/or being served by arts service organizations across the country.

To learn more about the research process, the individuals leading the work, and the future of the project, please visit consultingadc.com/asoresearch.

Data Values & Access

This research process and its outcomes are anchored in ADC Consulting's research values and principles. These values include a belief in the utility and importance of open data sources. With the publication of this data tool, our primary goal is to empower you, the audience and user of this data, to view, download and use the data according to your needs and interests.

Users may also download master raw data files by visiting bit.ly/ASOResearchRawData.

Data Corrections & Inclusions

The data reflected in this tool are meant to reflect a snapshot in time. The data was primarily sourced from 2022 IRS and SMU DataArts datasets and supplemented with information from the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies and this project's outreach in 2023. It was current as of cleaning that took place between June 2023 and early April 2024, was published on May 31, 2024, and reflects data for arts service entities operating in the United States from 2018–2022. These are preliminary and intended to inform more robust research in subsequent phases of work. It is not comprehensive of all arts service entities in the United States.

  • If your entity is included in the tool and you would like to submit a request for correction, please complete the ASO Research Phase 1 Data Tool Correction Form.
  • If your entity is not found within this dataset and you would like to be included in subsequent phases of this research project, please complete the ASO Research Interest Form.

The research team will accept corrections for entities included in this tool until November 30, 2024.

Funding & Future of This Project

The first phase of this research is made possible with the generous support of the Mellon Foundation. ADC Consulting is a grantee of the Mellon Foundation. The research, its process, and outcomes is not a commissioned project of the foundation and does not represent its views. ADC Consulting is a fiscally sponsored project of IndieSpace.

This tool includes details on 4,860 arts service entities that were operational in the United States and its territories from 2018–2022 as of cleaning that took place between June 2023 and early April 2024 and was published on May 31, 2024. The entities were identified by creating and cleaning a list of more than 17,000 organizations sourced from the IRS Business Master File, National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA), SMU DataArts and through outreach for this research project. Each organization operates with a mission and/or programs in service to artists, arts entities and/or the arts sector. These data are not comprehensive of the entire set of U.S. arts service entities.

Tips for the Best User Experience

  1. Use a Desktop or Laptop: To make the best use of this tool, we recommend using a desktop or laptop computer. While mobile access is possible, it may not provide the best user experience given the density of the data and width of the graphs and tables found within.
  2. Accessibility: Check out our accessibility tab on the left hand menu of this tool to learn more about the accessibility features of this tool. This tool is not compatible with all accessibility devices, hardware, and/or software. We've included a series of alternatives to ensure every user, regardless of disability, can have access to the data they are seeking.
  3. Familiarize yourself with each page first: We encourage you to read through each page, and review the information that exists in each one before you start playing with the filters and/or downloading any data.
  4. Review the Data in relation to the Report: Wondering what is the context for this data? We encourage you to check out the Phase 1 Research report in order to understand the full context of this data, which will be available on June 14, 2024 at consultingadc.com/asoresearch. Within the report you can also find links to the full raw data set if you'd like to engage with the data yourself outside of this tool and to accessible versions of graphs and tables.

Navigating the List & Graph Pages

This tool is meant to be interactive, which changes based on each user's refinement and/or selection of the data. When first opened, each page starts with a baseline structure for the data that pulls every record available for this study and reflects the figures outlined in the Phase 1 Research Report.

  1. Using the National ASO List & Map: The map allows you to zoom in and out to view ASOs based within and outside of the continental United States and Territories. The points on the map indicate a single ASO and will change based on the filters that are applied. The table below the map will also change based on the filters used. Please note that you will have to hover your cursor over the list and scroll down to get to the bottom of the list. You may also have to use the arrows at the bottom of the list to move to the next page of data if it does not all fit in the first page of the table.
  2. Menu Bar: On the left hand side of your page is the menu bar. To collapse the menu bar, please select the arrow at the bottom of the menu bar.
  3. How Data is Sorted: All data in every graph and chart is organized in alphabetical order from A–Z and/or numerical order from 1–n. You can reverse this order, or select other organizing devices for a specific graph or table by selecting the arrow in the title bar or hovering your mouse over the title bar and clicking on the AZ icon that appears.
  4. Filters: Data in each page can be modified by selecting or deselecting filters. Please note the filters are applied across all data on the page and cannot be segregated to a single graph or table. Filters can be selected to include ONLY a single piece of data or multiple pieces of data. To select all or deselect all options within a specific filter, click or unclick the box to the left of the filter name. To close a filter, please click anywhere in the tool outside of the filter box.
  5. Graph Details: Each graph is interactive. You can view the details pertaining to a specific slice of the pie by hovering your mouse over it.
  6. Resetting the Tool: You can reset an individual graph or table by hovering over the title bar and on the left hand side selecting the arrow icon that appears. You can reset the entire page by clicking the button "Reset" on the top right hand side of the page.
  7. Downloading Data: Data can be downloaded from each individual graph and/or table in CSV or image format using the buttons in each chart card header.

Questions

  1. Visit www.consultingadc.com/asoresearch to read more about the research process and to download the full Phase 1 research report.
  2. Send us your questions at [email protected].
  3. Sign up for a 15-minute Data Play Time and Orientation meeting via TidyCal here.

This tool is created within Google's LookerStudio Platform and is intended to be interactive, which changes based on each user's refinement and/or selection of the data through the use of filters.

  1. Use a Desktop or Laptop: To make the best use of this tool, we recommend using a desktop or laptop computer. While Mobile access is possible, it may not provide the best user experience given the density of the data and width of the graphs and tables found within.
  2. Screen Readers: At this time, this tool is not reliably accessible for screen reader users. Specifically the tool has the following challenges:
    • Currently the filters titles are unable to be altered in a way that allows them to be discernible to screen readers. As a result a screen reader may only read the word "button" instead of the title of the filter (e.g. state & territory). The options that appear under each filter are discernible to screen readers as is their status of being checked/unchecked. Currently there is no exit button that allows a user to collapse that section of the page without using a cursor.
    • Images are unable to be read properly via a screen reader as there is no way to add an alternative description to the images used in this tool for visual representation.
  3. Keyboard Only Access: At this time, we have assessed that this tool is not reliably accessible for some keyboard only users. Specifically, there is no way to update the focus indicator color when navigating between the tabs so finding where you are in the page may be difficult for some users depending on their visual acuity.
  4. Dark Mode: For viewers who need higher contrast, we encourage you to shift your browser settings to dark mode, specifically for the map and graphs.
  5. Alternative Text: Because the tool can be modified in hundreds of ways, we are unable to add alternative text to every image and/or table. Baseline data, which is reflected upon opening the tool and/or resetting the tool can also be found within the Phase 1 Background Research report, which is inclusive of alternative text.
  6. Data Play Time and Orientation: Acknowledging the accessibility limitations of this tool, the ADC Consulting team has created time slots for users to sign up to use the tool alongside an ADC consulting team member who can provide live audio description and/or any guidance for use of the tool. Sign up for a Data Play Time and Orientation slot here.
  7. Access to the Raw Data: You can download master raw data files by visiting bit.ly/ASOResearchRawData.
  8. Contact Us: If you are interested in a specific subset of the data or have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected].
  9. Future Updates: One unexpected finding of the process of developing this data tool is that there are currently no programs that exist where data can be customized as the user desires while also providing a full breadth of accessibility features, like alternative text. As new iterations of this research emerge, the ADC Consulting team will work to identify new tools that enhance accessibility features and user experience.
